Laguna Love: The LT5-powered 1973 Chevrolet Chevelle Laguna

Chevrolet Performance bridged past and present at the SEMA Show this year with its 1973 Chevelle Laguna Concept featuring the all-new LT5 crate engine.

The Laguna first appeared for the 1973 model year and was popular in NASCAR racing through the mid-1970s. It made a triumphant return in Las Vegas with a “blacked-out” look celebrating its dominance in stock car racing.

Under the hood of the car lurks the LT5 crate engine, the same power plant that powers the 2019 Corvette ZR1. Making 755 horsepower and 715 lb-ft of torque, it is the most powerful crate engine ever produced by Chevrolet Performance. The Laguna also utilizes an LT5 crate engine control system, and the engine is backed up by a T56 Magnum six-speed transmission. A Brembo brake upgrade system helps the Laguna come to a stop.

The LT5 features a specific, larger-capacity Eaton R2650 supercharger than the LT4 and has unique rotor profiles and larger heat exchangers within the intercooling system for approximately double the cooling capacity. This larger-displacement supercharger also expands the engine’s power band, which in turn enhances low-rpm power response and sustains horsepower through the upper rpm range. The engine also utilizes a unique 95mm throttle body and electronic bypass control for greater boost pressure control and torque management among other engine upgrades.

A dual fuel system features a primary direct injection system and a supplemental port-injection system for higher engine loads. Dual engine controllers are also utilized, one for each injection system.

The car looks mean, too.

To make them distinguishable from other Chevelle Models, all Lagunas featured urethane front-ends and this black-metallic Laguna is no different, as its fiberglass front fascia modifications give it a unique look. This concept has also received a number of modern touches, including a suspension upgrade, custom front grille LED exterior lighting and a hood scoop to emphasize the LT5 engine. It rides on 18x10-inch wheels, with 295/418 front and 305/418 rear tires all featuring red lettering. It also features a variety of Laguna badges.

The retrimmed interior utilizes RECARO performance seats and Bluetooth phone capability. A Corvette heritage steering wheel, performance shifter handle and trim ring, and black-faced analog gauges are also part of the package.

With this Laguna, Chevrolet Performance has truly used a piece of automotive history to create a brand new one.
